Therapeutic Massage - A Healing Art
A massage with me generally consists of a combination of Swedish and non-Swedish techniques, though my clients may request a specific modality. Listed below are descriptions of different massage techniques I incorporate into my sessions.
Relaxation and Deep Swedish Massage - A form of Western massage using techniques developed in Europe and the US. Relaxation Massage is performed using oil or lotion with light to moderate pressure. The fluid strokes and stretches release tension, promote relaxation, improve circulation, and increase range of motion. With Deep Swedish Massage, the muscles are first shortened for better access of the connective tissue, and then deeper strokes are applied.
Non-Swedish Techniques
~ Deep Tissue Massage - A deeper more specific type of massage, slower strokes and more direct pressure or friction is applied across the grain of the muscle. Performed using little or no lotion, deep tissue massage 'releases' underlying connective tissue (fascia) which realigns structural imbalances and reduces chronic muscle tension. Breathing and movement techniques aid in releasing this muscular congestion. The techniques I use are Myofascial Release, Cross-fiber friction, and Trigger Point.

Deep tissue massage
~ Sports Massage - Used for both novice and serious athletes, sports massage focuses on the muscles relevant to the particular athletic activity. It may include pre-event massage techniques which stimulate circulation and calm nervous tension, post-event methods that relieve soreness and assist in the removal of lactic acid and other waste products, and/or a maintenance approach that helps promote greater athletic endurance and performance, lessens the chance of injury, and reduces recovery time. ~ Hot Stone - Hot stone massage offers an entirely new level of therapy. Warmed stones are placed on and around you. Then, massage, using additional stones, is done with oil using long flowing strokes. The continuous heat relaxes tight, contracted muscles and aids in dissolving trigger points. This massage is a very cleansing, immune strengthening experience.

Hot Stone Massage
~ Foot Reflexology - A form of therapeutic foot massage where specific pressure techniques are performed on the foot--these reflex points on the foot correspond with body parts. Since reflexology is a 'holistic healing art,' the goal is to create a balance and harmony throughout the 'whole' body. Click here for more information.
~ Aromatherapy - An ancient art using pure essential oils (extracts or essences) from flowers, herbs, and trees in a gentle effective massage. Customized for your body's individual needs such as reducing stress, inducing relaxation, combating jet lag, and increasing energy.
~Hydrotherapy - The use of moist hot and cold packs in conjunction with massage treatments has long been recognized as effective. Use of ice or heat is discussed prior to the session and treatment depends on the type of injury you have suffered. I also give instructions for hydrotherapy as 'homework' or self-care before my client departs. See Ice & Heat Treatment for Injuries. |
